Bravo, Giuseppe!
This was the cry I heard an enthusiastic young woman behind me yelling gleefully for several minutes during the curtain call of the Met's largely terrific current incarnation of Lucia di Lammermoor. Well, friends, the verdict is in and she was ENTIRELY justified. Giuseppe Filianoti is truly a revelation and not to be missed. Not to downplay the stellar efforts of Elizabeth Futral (who was truly mesmerizing throughout act III), but do try to see one of the two remaining performances wih Filianoti as Edgardo (Nov. 7th and 10th). Whatever your feelings may be about Lucia or, for that matter, about Donizetti's body of work in general, this is a worthy evening. I guarantee a tingle or two.

I was at last Thursday night's performance (11/3), and while Filianoti soared during the rejection scene at the end of act ii, his "bell' alma inamorata" finale was weak (I am forever spoiled by Pavarotti). Futral was generally great, with some terrific acting, esp. during the duet at the end of act i.
